Book Review: How Women Help Men Find God

January 9, 2011 in: Book Reviews

My friend returned this book recently after borrowing it. I thumbed through it and was reminded how much I learned, so I wanted to share it for those of you who may be looking for a sign of hope.
First of all, the title is not accurate. How Women Help Me Find God sounds like a how-to guide to get a hellion boyfriend saved.
David Murrow is the author of Why Men Hate Going to Church. This book is a companion book written straight to women. He is brave and kind enough to tell you why your son, father or hell-bound boyfriend won’t go to Sunday School.

He explains point by point why some men, even men who sincerely love God, do not feel comfortable in religious settings. It is both eye opening and encouraging.
The book is primarily written to women with unbelieving husbands or sons who have rebelled, but it offers great suggestions for all women. I would recommend it for everyone who teaches boys in Sunday school, decorates the church building or wants to help men in their lives draw closer to God. It helps develop a deeper understanding of how men think in all areas of their lives and especially about their spiritual walk.
There are three sections: why men – at least some men – do not like church; what your local church can do to be more guy-friendly; and finally, what one woman can do to make a difference. The good news is there are things women can do to reach men for God and it is well worth the effort, even if some of us gals have to change and give up some treasured ideals.
I have looked at church functions quite differently after reading this book. I noticed a few things in my church services and asked my pastor, and sure enough, he had read the book too.
Murrow does step on some toes and a few of his ideas have raised controversy. That really just makes the book more powerful.
If you’ve been praying for and crying over that man for years, this book may very well be the first sign of hope you’ll find. If you’re a guy, it probably won’t tell you anything you don’t know, but you’ll like Murrow’s direct style.
I’m curious to hear from other people who have read or plan to read this book or Why Men Hate Going to Church
